The Department of Arabic is one of the founder departments of Nowgong College and was established in the year 1944 along with the foundation of the college itself. As far as the recorded history of the institution goes, the founding college authority had envisioned Arabic as an essential discipline from the very beginning.
An advertisement was published in the Amrita Bazar Patrika on 1st November 1944, inviting applications for the post of a Professor qualified to teach both Arabic and Persian for the Intermediate College, Nowgong (Assam), with a monthly pay of Rs. 100. In response to this advertisement, Mr. A. Rauf Choudhury was appointed as the first teacher of Arabic in the same month.

Accordingly, Gauhati University granted affiliation for the programme. To meet the increasing academic requirements of the department, Md. Abdul Baten was appointed as a full-time teacher on 1st August 1994.
