It is an exhilarating moment for the people of Nagaon and entire Assam that Nowgong College (Autonomous) has now been upgraded to Nagaon University. In the Nagaon University Act of 2023, it is declared that Nowgong College (Autonomous) has been upgraded to Nagaon University to constitute and establish a teaching, research-oriented, affiliating and semi-residential university which will incorporate an Open and Distance Learning Centre. This is indeed an epoch-making event in the history of the institution, which was established in 1944, in the colonial Assam, to create academic excellence in the middle Assam. The institution’s journey from a college to the university is replete with rich memories, hard work and many achievements. As the institution has stepped into a new stage of excellence, its members and well-wishers are looking forward to more achievements in academic and various other fields like research and innovation. The institution has already achieved a lot in the past years — it is noteworthy that the institution has been twice accredited with ‘A’ grade in the assessment by NAAC. The institution has already contributed much to the field of research, and its students have shown excellence in various fields including academics. It can be expected that as the institution has been upgraded into a university, and Dr. Hitesh Deka has taken the oath as the first Vice Chancellor of Nagaon University, there will be further research and innovation, students will get more opportunity to fulfil their dreams and to use their potential to the fullest.
Established in pre-independent era in 1944, Nowgong College in its 80 years of glorious journey has witnessed many achievements and significant developments, which are the milestones of this elite academic institution. Started with a single stream of Arts, now, we have three streams with more than 3609 students and 85 capable faculties with 450 nos. publications in last 5 year to their credits in National & International Peer Reviewed Journals, Books, book chapters. Apart from 24 UG courses under 19 departments, 16 PG courses, 09 Ph. D. programme and 17 certificate courses as per UGC guideline, apart from 03 Open and Distance Learning Centres (ODLs).

Moreover, the college has UGC funded B. Voc. Programme, Diploma Courses and 17 Certificate Courses along with other self-financed skill based programmes. In addition to several Major and Minor Research Projects, the College has received DST funded FIST grant, Advanced Institutional Level Biotech Hub and DST STI Hub. A fully automated Library with more than 61, 200 Books, Journals, Reference Books as well as other publications is another asset of this Institution. Apart from well managed class rooms, there are several ICT mediated class rooms and other facilities for better student support. The College possesses strong stakeholders, alumni; parents, authority and students, who play a pivotal role in the all-round development of the college.

In the year, UGC has conferred Autonomous status to Nowgong College. The College has undergone 4 cycles of NAAC accreditation process with continuously scaling higher CGPA with 3.27 at present, and fourth cycle has been extended till 31st December, 2025. Considering its quality initiatives, NAAC and UGC have conferred Nowgong College with the status of Mentor Institute and MHRD has selected the college for Institutional Innovation Cell.
Nowgong College fraternity always tries to maintain Clean, Green and Swachh Campus. As recognition of Clean and Green Campus, Mahatma Gandhi National Council for Rural Education, Ministry of Education, and Govt. of India conferred “District Green Champion Award” to Nowgong College (A) for the year 2020-2021.
In the year 2021, Govt. of Assam declared to upgrade Nowgong College (Autonomous) as university and very recently The Nagaon University Bill 2023 has passed in Assam Legislative Assembly on 14th September, 2023.

As a part of Social responsibility and Campus to Community activities, college authority has initiated several activities to involve students in community service. Very recently, NSS Unit of Nowgong College (A) in association with IQAC established “Sarothi-The Time Bank” for welfare of the isolated as well as abandoned people of the college fraternity.
