The Department of Hindi was established at Nagaon University in 1978. Late Ajit Chandra Deka was the founder professor of this department. Initially it started with one permanent teacher and one guest teacher. After him Dr. Dilip Sarmah, Late Manjumoni Kalita, Dr. Dipa Deka, Dr Karabi Devi, Late Dr. Kaveri Sharma, Puja Baruah, Dr. Violet Dutta and Dr. Sanjib Mandal were appointed to the department. Currently, the department has three permanent faculty members and two temporary faculty members.
Hindi Department has a rich history of teaching and promoting the Hindi language. Initially, Hindi was taught as MIL subject at the higher secondary and graduation levels. In 1983, Hindi was introduced as Honours and General subject at the UG level. From 2019, Hindi has been taught under the CBCS curriculum, includes courses such as AECC, SEC and DSE along with the Honours course at the UG level.
As per NEP 2020 guidelines, the department now offers Major, Minor, SEC, IDC and AEC courses in line with the new curriculum. Furthermore, PG course has also been introduced from 2024 in the department.
The Department also offered a certificate course on “Srimanta Sankardev: Literature and Culture”, which is conducted over a six-month duration. Efforts are continuously made to enhance the curriculum and improve teaching. The department is actively working towards promoting Hindi in Assam. Many graduates from the department have achieved success in various fields.
