The faculty as a separate discipline was introduced from the very beginning, i.e. from 1944, 7th August is one of the font ranking educational personalities. This department thanks to the unflinching devotion, selfless service and unsparing efforts of the Assamese teachers, Nowgong College has carved a niche in the temple of higher education. In our trials and tribulation the people of undivided Nagaon district have always stood by us. The department is one of the most prestigious departments of Nowgong College of Assam. From the very beginning the department has excelled in academic performance. Many teachers of the department of Assamese have made significant contribution to the development of Assamese Language, Literature and Culture. Former head of the Department of Assamese Prof. Mahim Bora have been elected Presidents of Assam Sahitya Sabha, a highly prestigious honour. Dr. S. Rajguru was a distinguished scholar. Distinguished teachers adorned the faculty of Assamese from time to time.

Presently the department has 5 (five) full time teachers and other 6 (Six) regular teachers of Nowgong College (e.g. two English, two Hindi, two Bengali) and two Part Time teachers. The academic condition in terms of quality and learning transfer process is healthy and adequate. All of them are sincerely engaged in scholarly pursuits.
We are proud to note that the Department is the only higher academic study center in the district.

Mission of the Department:
The Main Missions of the Department are Teaching, Learning of both classical and old and Modern Assamese Language, Literature, Culture and Evaluation in the Under Graduate & Post Graduate Level to motivate the learners to acquire proficiency and skill or their better placement within the state country and abroad.
