The Department of Botany of Nagaon University, originally of Nowgong College, is one of the oldest science departments established in 1953 under the leadership and foresight of several personalities like Md. Abdul Hakim, Sri Madhab Chandra Das, Sri Bipen Chandra Nath, Sri Budheswar Gohain, Dr. Narahari Das, Dr. Likhan Chandra Kagti and many more to cite. Nowgong College was upgraded to Nagaon University in 2023, and the department presently functions as a constituent department of Nagaon University.

At present, the department offers Undergraduate, Post-Graduate and Ph.D. programme. The department holds several facilities like well-furnished classrooms, laboratories, digitally equiped advanced lecture rooms, Phycology Research Laboratory, Lichen Laboratory & Herbarium facilities, Botanical Garden, Mushroom cultivation centre and seminar hall.
