The Department of Geography at Nagaon University stands as a centre of academic excellence and innovation, with a rich legacy dating back to 17th November 1952, when it was established as an undergraduate department at Nowgong College. Founded under the visionary leadership of Prof. Kamal Ch. Goswami, the first faculty member and Head of the Department, the department has evolved steadily over the decades.

Initially, the department offered three-year undergraduate degree programmes (B.A. and B.Sc.) in Geography under the affiliation of Gauhati University. A significant milestone was achieved in 1978 with the introduction of Honours courses in Geography, marking a major advancement in academic depth and specialization. Continuing its tradition of progressive academic expansion, the department launched its postgraduate programme in 2021 under the autonomous framework, reinforcing its commitment to advanced teaching and scholarly excellence.

Further strengthening its academic stature, the department introduced its Ph.D. programme in 2023, thereby nurturing a vibrant research environment and providing scholars with opportunities for advanced research in geographical sciences.
