HISTORY OF NOWGONG COLLEGE
Nowgong College, established on August 7, 1944 is one of the premier colleges of Assam. The college, established with permission from the University of Calcutta, has been playing a pivotal role in the cause of higher education since inception. It contributed largely to the awakening of the people to the values of higher education. The high hopes and zealous efforts of people like Late Matiram Bora and others were answered to by succeeding batches of students and a set of dedicated and ideal teachers. The college celebrates its Platinum Jubilee in its 75th year, in 2019.
History of the Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics started in the year 1944 at Nowgong College premises in the Arts Stream under the Head of the Department Prof. Debeswar Pathak who was the founder teacher and Head of the Department. In 1949 Prof. Kamakhya Kamal Pandit was appointed as Head of the Department.Department of Mathematics came under grant-in-aid system on 1st March,1953 at Nowgong College under Gauhati University.

Debeswar Pathak
Prof. Debeswar Pathak, M. Sc. was the founder teacher and Head of the Department of Mathematics, Nowgong College. He joined Nowgong college in 1944.
Kamakhya Kamal Pandit
Prof. Kamakhya Kamal Pandit, M. Sc. joined Nowgong college on 11th July 1947. He was appointed as Head of the Department in the year 1949. He was one of the eminent teacher of mathematics in middle part of Assam at that time. He was retired on 31st December 1978.
Chandra Prava Devi
Prof. Chandra Prava Devi was born in Tokoubari, Guwahati in the year 1935. She joined Nowgong College on 6th May 1958. She retired on 28th February 1995. She has actively participated in different programme organized by department of Mathematics, Nowgong College till date. She is currently staying in Amolapaty, Nagaon in her own residence.
