The Department of Physics of Nagaon University, originally established on March 1, 1953 at Nowgong College under the visionary leadership of Late Kailash Chakrawarty, a distinguished former Professor of Presidency College, Calcutta, has been a cornerstone of Physics education in this region of Assam. Following the upgradation of Nowgong College to Nagaon University in 2023, the department continues its rich academic legacy as an integral constituent of the University.

Since its inception, the department has remained committed to academic excellence, attracting students not only from the Nagaon district but also from neighbouring districts such as Morigaon, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong. The department offers a strong undergraduate honours programme in Physics, a certificate course on basic electrical circuits and maintenance, and regularly conducts skill development programmes to equip students with practical and applied skills.

In a significant academic advancement, the department introduced a postgraduate programme in Physics in 2024, marking a new chapter in its academic growth under Nagaon University. This initiative reflects the department’s enduring commitment to higher learning, research orientation, and the holistic development of future physicists.
